Obituary for Lewis D. Sauder
Lewis D. Sauder, 96, of Manheim, PA, entered his heavenly garden, after a brief illness on Saturday evening, December 23, 2017 at Lancaster General Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Washington Boro, he was the son of the late Willis G. and Anna S. Dombach Sauder. He was the husband of Dorothy G. Shenk Sauder for 72 years at the time of her passing in 2016.
Lewis was a faithful member and oldest male member of Chiques Church of the Brethren in Manheim. He prepared graves at Chiques Cemetery and other local cemeteries for many years. In addition to being a self-employed farmer, he founded Lewis D. Sauder Concrete Work in 1947. Earlier, he worked as a butcher, wall paper hanger, and tended market at Roots Country Market and other farmer’s markets.
In addition to gardening, he enjoyed raising gladiolas and woodworking. He and his wife traveled extensively in the continental United States and Alaska.
He is survived by seven children, David, husband of June Whitsel Sauder, of Elizabethtown, Abraham, husband of Bonnie Miller Sauder, of Schwenksville, Lester, husband of Krista Smith Sauder, of Manheim, Rosanne, wife of Irving Fritz, of Manheim, Barry, husband of Bobbe Landis Sauder, of Manheim, Deborah, wife of Doug Krasley, of Cornwall, and Bonnie, wife of Clair Hoover, of Manheim; a son-in-law, Larry Sawadsky of Elizabethtown; 23 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren. He was expecting a great granddaughter in March. He was also preceded in death by daughter, Nancy Sawadsky, and three siblings, Ethel Zimmerman, Russel Sauder, and Norman Sauder.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 2:45 PM at Chiques Church of the Brethren, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, PA. Interment will follow in the adjacent cemetery. The family will receive guests at the church on Saturday afternoon from 1:00-2:30 PM.
