Obituary of Amber Rae McCardle

Please share a memory of Amber to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Amber Rae McCardle, 87, of Elizabethtown, PA, formerly of Beavertown, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday evening, December 5, 2020 at Hershey Medical Center.  Born in Beavertown, she was the daughter of the late Harold C. and Theresa M. Corman Hassinger.  She was the loving wife of Wayne B. McCardle for 65 years on June 16.

Amber led a full and gratifying life of serving the community.  Her first job was as a lifeguard at McClure Veterans Memorial Pool.  After earning a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education from Penn State University in 1955, she embarked on a rewarding career as a public-school teacher.  Serving as West Snyder High School’s health and physical education teacher, she was also responsible for managing the concession stand and coaching all the girls’ sports.  After taking off a few years to start a family, Amber returned to teaching and was then rehired by the former West Snyder Area School District (now Midd-West School District) as a third-grade teacher in the Beaver Adams Elementary School where she later taught fourth-grade until she retired in 1993 after 34 years.  Mrs. McCardle was well-respected by her pupils and she always “went the extra mile” for each of them and their education.  She was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and retired teachers’ association.

Throughout her lifetime, Amber was always active.  She loved spending time with family and friends.  In addition, she enjoyed playing the trombone and being the drum majorette in the high school marching band, waterskiing, reading a good book, solving cryptoquip puzzles, and playing piano.  She was a longtime and faithful member of Beaver Lutheran Church where she helped with Vacation Bible School, funerals, and served on other various committees.  She was also a member and former president of the Beaver Springs Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, participated in the Silver Sneakers, sang in the West Snyder Community Choir and was a member of the Home and School Women’s Club.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Carole R. McCardle of Beavertown, mother of Gena Bickhart and Michael Romig, Debra K., wife of Barry Sheesley, of Elizabethtown, parents of Derek and Amber Sheesley, and Michael W., husband of Cindy Geedey McCardle, of Fishersville, VA, parents of Austin and Cody McCardle; and four great grandchildren, Kaitlyn A. Kunz, Devan A. Bickhart, Ashlyn R. Wise, and Brysen N. Oberlin.  She was also preceded in death by a brother, Reynold C. Hassinger.

Services are private.  If desired, contributions may be made in her memory to Beaver Lutheran Church, 18207 Rt. 522, Beavertown, PA 17813.  To express a condolence with the family or for additional information, visit www.spencefuneralservices.com.
