Obituary of John A. Shuman, Jr.

John A. Shuman, Jr., 79, of Maytown, PA, formerly of Lebanon County, unexpectedly went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday morning, August 27, 2021 at Paramount Senior Living in Maytown.  Born in Manheim Twp., he was the son of the late Rev. John A. Shuman, Sr. and the late Anna E. Light Shuman.  He was the husband of the late Karen E. House Shuman for 53 years prior to her passing in 2017.

John was a member of Chiques Church and former member of Mount Olivet Church of the Brethren where he served as a deacon in each congregation.  Prior to marriage, he served two years in Brethren Volunteer Service in the medical research lab at University of Michigan.  John was employed as a maintenance worker by G&G Feeds, White Oak Mills, and retired from Wenger Feeds.  In addition to enjoying reading, woodworking, repairing things, camping, and cutting firewood, he was happiest when he was teasing others or telling jokes.

He is survived by three children, John L., husband of Reba F. Keener Shuman, of Mount Joy, Dr. Joel L. Shuman of Blacksburg, VA, and Susan C., wife of Lawrence P. Terrell, of Wallingford; seven grandchildren; and five siblings, Kenneth R., husband of Nedra L. Shuman, of Lititz, Larry E., husband of Christine L. Shuman, of Lebanon, Dennis E. Shuman of Hershey, David E., husband of Marion B. Shuman, of New Bloomfield, and Mary Ann, wife of Stanley A. Tyson, of Lebanon.  He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Teresa A. Farrell, a son-in-law, Patrick A. “Mac” Farrell, and infant twin sons; and a granddaughter.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday morning, September 1, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Chiques Church, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, PA 17545.  Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery.  The family will receive guests during a viewing at the church on Wednesday morning from 9:30 AM until the time of the service.  If desired, contributions may be made to Chiques Church Benevolent Fund, earmarked John Shuman.  To express a condolence with the family or to watch a webcast of the service beginning Thursday morning, visit www.spencefuneralservices.com.
