Dear Mrs. Shull, Susan, Jim, Nancy and families,
Our condolences to you all! Although my memories of living on Mt. Joy St. are few, I do remember more than a few enjoyable gatherings together with our families. What a good time we had! I was pleasantly surprised several years ago when after a concert in Lititz Springs Park I heard my name called and there were Dr. & Mrs. Shull. How nice it was to be remembered, and have a little visit !
My mother also sends her sincere condolences, she recognized the picture in the paper right away and cut it out for all of us to read.

Thank you for sharing the service with us via YouTube. Carl, Dr. Shull, was an important part of my life: First as a a professor of music history, then as a travel/tour leader for our trip to his beloved Vienna in 1975, and finally as my cheerleader as I created and established a professional musical life of my own. I owe much of my musical life to Carl, and to Otis Kitchen, for seeing a talent in me and allowing me to start studying music education at Etown in 1972. My love of music history comes from Carl, and we enjoyed many fine discussions over the years. The last time I saw Carl and Dot was when they invited me for dinner at the Masonic home a few July's ago during Etown Music Camp. It was a great joy to spend time with Carl and Dot, who he was obviously devoted to. Carl will be missed, but his memory will live on in those he touched. Sheldon Bair, Etown Class of 1976

I was sad to learn of Dr. Shull's passing. As one of his former students who graduated in 1974 (see photo), his steady leadership and impeccable standards stuck with me throughout my career and life, as did his good friend, the late Otis Kitchen. (See 2006 photo). It was an honor to be able to stay in periodic contact with Dr. Shull over the years and even play a few trumpet and organ selections at various churches with him. He was a master of his craft. God be with and comfort his family .

Dr Shull was my organ teacher at Elizabethtown College. I loved him as a teacher and he inspired in me a love of the organ, and I am still playing today. We met Carl and Dot on a cruise years later and had a wonderful time with them.
My sympathy to his family.

My best memories of Carl were when I sang under him as he directed the Lancaster Church of the Brethren Senior Choir. He had a way of getting the members of the choir to do their best.
His long life made an impact on many people.
Blessings to the whole family as you remember Carl.

We were very good friends of Carl & Dot. Eleanor & Dot were roommates at Bridgewater College. Since we all liked Chinese food we would frequently get together at Dragon Buffet & Sushi Bar in Lancaster. Some of our best memories were the 10 days we spent together in Morocco. What a great and talented man he was. We will truly miss him. Love to Dot & the family.

We have very good memories. We met Carl on a number of occasions over the years. Regina as a schoolgirl in Vienna and as a family we met in Pennsylvania and also once in Germany. He was such a friendly person and it was easy to talk to him on any subject. His interest in everything was amazing.
Our love is with his family. In particular Susan and Nancy and Jim, because the loss of a parent leaves always a wound in your heart, irrespective of the age. Our thoughts are with Dot, may she find comfort in her faith. Rest in peace, Carl, after an eventful and fulfilled life.

Many good memories of Dr. Shull. His office was inside the front door of Rider Hall. Dr. Shull had a manual typewriter. He was the fastest two finger typist that I ever saw! My sympathy to the family.

Dear Cousins Dot, Susan, Jim, Nancy and all the extended family,
What a stunner just now to read this incredible obituary of this incredible man. My connections with him span so many areas—family ties, church music, choir. He was such a beacon of musical excellence, someone I was proud to be related to and to work under. What a beautiful life he led, and what a powerful presence he was throughout my formative years and beyond. When the Lancaster Church of the Brethren commissioned me to honor choir member Ken Dotterer with a choral anthem, I was shaking in my boots a little to make sure the piece passed muster under the choir's director, the venerable Dr. Shull. When he gave it a look-over and nodded saying, "Nice piece," I breathed a huge sigh of relief! Here's a photo of my daughter and me with Ken the day the choir premiered it, just three weeks before Ken died. While your husband/dad is not in the photo, he was very much in "the picture" that day. So much love to your family. I know you will miss him terribly. —Alisa (Huffman) Bair
