Edna J. Verlenden, 98, of Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, PA, died Wednesday evening, November 7, 2012 at Masonic Health Care Center. Born in New Castle County, Delaware, she was the daughter of the late Arthur B. and Anna I. Boyd Johnson. She was the wife of the late Charles L. Verlenden who died in 1971. Formerly of Springfield, PA and Boynton Beach, FL, Mrs. Verlenden was a former member of Cason United Methodist Church in Delray Beach, FL and Darby United Methodist Church where she had been a member for 50 years. In addition to being a circle leader for the Women's Society of Christian Services, she was a choir member, missionary chairwoman, and served as communion steward. Mrs. Verlenden was also a member and past warden of the Order of the Eastern Star, Friendship Chapter No. 551 in Springfield, PA She attended Temple University and Banks College, both in Philadelphia. She was employed as a teller and in the loan department by the former Delaware County Bank. Edna enjoyed sewing, knitting, and solving crossword and cryptogram puzzles. She is survived by a step daughter-in-law, Sara Ann (Sally) Verlenden of Honey Brook, PA (formerly of West Chester, PA); two step grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; and a niece and three nephews.. She was preceded in death by a stepson, Kenneth Charles Verlenden; and two brothers, George I. Johnson and Paul A. Johnson. There will be no viewing. A graveside service will be held Monday, November 12, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Edgewood Memorial Park, 325 Baltimore Pike, Glen Mills, PA. If desired, contributions may be made in her memory to Cason United Methodist Church, 342 North Swinton Ave., Delray Beach, FL 33444.
