Obituary of Royden P. Nice

Royden P. "Roy" Nice, Lt. Col. (Retired), 94, of Annville, PA, formerly of Palmyra, PA, entered into rest with his Lord on Saturday evening, January 26, 2013 at his residence. Born in Green Lane, Montgomery Co., PA, he was the son of the late Morrison R. and Mamie Florence Snyder Nice. He was the husband of Lucille Moyer Nice for 67 years before her death in 2011. Mr. Nice was a member of Palm Evangelical Lutheran Church in Palmyra. Lt. Col. Nice served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. He was also called to active duty during the Korean War and was deployed to Korea in 1952. Beginning in 1959, he was employed by the United States Property and Fiscal Office, occupying key management positions including Fiscal Accounting Officer, Supply Management Officer, and Executive Assistant. Throughout his career, he was a member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and was employed as Staff Specialist by the Selective Service Section where he ultimately was appointed as Director and jointly as the State Selective Service Standby Deputy Director for Pennsylvania. He was a member of Military Officers Association of America, Reserve Officers Association, and a life member of PA National Guard Association. In addition to playing golf and bridge, he enjoyed fresh water fishing, dancing, and the years they spent during retirement in Vero Beach, Florida. He is survived by two daughters, Terrill A., wife of David Shipley, of Cincinnati, OH, and Cynthia N., wife of Warren "Barney" Myer, of Mount Gretna, PA; a son, Jeffrey R., husband of Theresa D. Nice, of Keymar, MD; three grandchildren, Michael D. Shipley, Megan K. Keiter, and Thomas C. Keiter; and a great grandson, Jeffrey M. Shipley. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, M. Grant Nice. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Palm Lutheran Church, 11 West Cherry Street, Palmyra, PA 17078 with Rev. Dr. John D. Merkel officiating. Interment will be private at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends at the church on the morning of the service from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. Please omit flowers.
