Obituary of Bernard E. Spence
Bernard E. Spence, 78, of Creekside, PA, passed into eternity on Sunday morning, April 27, 2014, at Beacon Ridge, in Indiana, PA following a brief decline in health. Born in Washington Township, Indiana County, PA, he was the son of the late Robert B. and Hilda F. Black Spence. He was the husband of the late Anna Mae Hollobaugh Spence who died August 6, 2013 after 54 years of marriage.
Following an enlistment in the United States Navy, Bernard was employed by the former Fisher Scientific Company in Indiana for nearly 40 years. He also had a small business of mowing for Christmas tree growers and other land owners in the area. He was a fixture in the Dutch Run community for 50 years where he enjoyed managing the groundhog and deer populations by practicing his shooting skills. But most of all, he enjoyed his two grandchildren.
He is survived by four children, William P. (Brenda K. McCoy) Spence of Manheim, PA, Sharon S. (R. Duwane) Waltenbaugh of Creekside, Mark D. (Stacey D. Fulmer) Spence of Elderton, and Marsha D. Spence of Creekside, friend of Kyle A Sharp; two grandchildren, Curtis D. (Raquel D.Weaver) Waltenbaugh and Kaitlyn F. Cummins, fiancé of Travis P. Potts; a sister, Evelyn A. (William "Bill" Sprankle) Malcolm, of Indiana; and a special friend, Connor Sharp. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Leonard B. "Red" Spence, Robert L. Spence, Alphonsis L. Adamson, and an infant sister.
The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff of Beacon Ridge for the care they provided during his time there.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday evening, April 29, 2014, at 7:00 PM at Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home, 965 Philadelphia Street, Indiana, PA with Pastor Kathy Milhoerck officiating. Interment will be private in the Atwood Cemetery. The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 5:30 PM until the time of the service.
