Obituary of Jay R. Nissley

Jay R. Nissley, 83, of Manheim, PA, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday morning, January 19, 2015, at Pleasant View Retirement Community following a lengthy illness. Born in the village of White Oak in the same home in which he lived his entire life, he was the son of the late Landis L. and Mae Greenley Nissley. He was the husband of Mildred A. "Millie" Cassel Nissley for 59 years on June 19. Jay was a member of Chiques Church of the Brethren in Manheim where he had served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. He was a 1949 graduate of Manheim Central High School. Prior to his retirement, he was a self-employed farmer. He was also employed part-time for First Rate Dry Wall in Elm. Jay was a member of Manheim Young Farmers and was a 4-H Club leader for 27 years, focusing on the baby beef program. He enjoyed running, outdoor ice skating on neighborhood ponds, traveling, and four-wheeler excursions. He also followed Manheim church softball games. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family and attending the activities of his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, J. Edward, husband of Karen E. Landis Nissley and Philip V., husband of Christie R. Geltmacher Nissley, Gini Lou, wife of Robin L. Horst, all of Manheim, and Kelly S., wife of Jon H. Rittenhouse, of Mount Joy; a foster son, Charles P., husband of Marla Weaver Barley, of Annville, PA; 12 grandchildren; three foster grandchildren; a brother, Paul L., husband of Rachel Nissley, of Holtwood; and a sister, Gladys Metzler, of Lititz. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Gary L. Nissley, and a daughter, Pamela M. Nissley. A funeral service will be held at Chiques Church of the Brethren, 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim, PA 17545 on Monday morning, January 26, 2015, at 11:00 AM with ministers Ron Strickler and Nathan Myer officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Sunday afternoon from 2-5:00 PM and on Monday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
