Obituary of William D. Groff

William D. Groff, 85, of Lancaster, formerly of Manheim, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday afternoon, February 11, 2016, at Brethren Village surrounded by his loving family following a year-long illness. Born in Manheim, he was the son of the late Frank P. and Mary Gibble Groff. He was the husband of Janet L. Haldeman Groff for 61 years on July 18.
Bill was a member of Calvary Church where he sang in the choir and was involved with the visitation ministry. He was a 1948 graduate of Ephrata High School and served in the United States Navy as a BT2 during the Korean War. He retired from the United States Postal Service where he delivered mail for 37 years in the former Rural Delivery #4 route in Manheim. He was also a poultry farmer.
In addition to golfing and bowling, he enjoyed gardening, traveling, and playing games with friends. He also loved sports and played recreational softball in the Manheim area much of his lifetime. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his adoring grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Randy Groff of Dallas, TX, Deb, wife of Randy Youndt, of Lititz, Gini, wife of Dennis Hummer, of Lititz, and Sue, wife of Jeff Enck, of Lititz; eight grandchildren, Erin Youndt Perigo, Josh Hummer, Jordan Youndt, Kristen Hummer Fetter, Ryan Hummer, Jeffrey Enck, Jr., Zach Enck, and Lexi Enck; four great grandchildren; and three siblings, Ardeth Wolgemuth of Lancaster, Beatrice, wife of Robert Kurtz, of Lancaster, and Donald, husband of Kathy Groff, of Lititz. He was preceded in death by a son, Barry Groff, and a brother, Gerald Groff.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Private interment will be in Middlecreek Brethren Cemetery, Lititz. There will be no public viewing. The family will receive guests at the church at a luncheon immediately following the service. Please omit flowers.
