My very first friends were Judy and Jane - we were barely out of our toddler years. We leaned our many tales before we could write our stories. Jane and I played flutes and enjoyed sharing band for years in school. We had good memories and friendship. I cherish our years with Jane.

I have a particularly vivid childhood memory of Jane. It had to have been sometime between 1970 and 1972, the years my family of origin lived in Westport, CT, because the setting was my bedroom floor in our Westport house. I would have been between 8 and 10 years old then.
It was summer (I remember Jane had on shorts and a sleeveless summer top), and just about everybody on my mom's side of the family was visiting us for some reason. Jane decided to ditch the grown-ups, or maybe she was despatched to look after us -- we'll never know -- but she came looking for me and my sister (Meg Woodside). We must have been bored and out of sorts because no one was paying attention to us. But Jane pulled out a deck of cards and challenged us to Crazy Eights.
"Crazy Eights?" we said. "What's that?" We didn't know how to play that game.
So, Jane sat herself down, 'Indian style', and proceeded to deal us our first ever hands of Crazy Eights, right there on the crazy deep shag carpeting of my crazy blue and purple bedroom with the crazy hippy-dippy floral bedspread and curtains.
Jane made that game the most hysterically funny activity human beings have ever invented. I don't know how she did it, or what she found in that game to fuel a non-stop stream of jokes, but I was in awe of her. It seemed to me that every wisecrack she made was the wittiest, smartest, coolest thing anybody had ever said. I thought, cousin Jane could go on TV and be a comedian. And I knew I wanted to be like her -- to make people laugh and relax and feel free and liked for who they are. That's how she made me feel -- like she really liked me and was having a good time with me -- even though I was just a little kid. Jane was aces.
And Crazy Eights is still my favorite game of cards. Thanks, Jane.

Great caring and great courage were the priceless gifts you and Jane gave to each other. We know how difficult it is to lose a sister, and we know you will miss her so very much. We also know that she will live in your heart forever. May she Rest in Peace.

Dear Family and Friends of Jane,
Since I cannot be at the service I wanted to share with you a special memory I have of Jane. At a long ago family gathering I was fussing mightily with fear and trepidation about something I wanted to undertake. I wish I could remember more details, but what I do remember is that Jane offered this advice, in no uncertain terms, short and sweet. " You must go for it, I know you can do it." Those words meant the world to me at the time and fomed a bond I never forgot. That " go for it" spirit embodies Jane for me and I loved her for it. Thank you, Jane.
Carol Patterson

Although time and distance made visits infrequent you were always in our hearts. We were fortunate to have had you as part of our family. We are so glad that we saw you this past November and will cherish the memories of that visit, the smiles and the laughter.

Dear Stephanie, Jim, Charlie, Debbie, and all Jane's grandchildren: It's so strange to be writing this to you after so many years of hearing about you but never meeting you. Dear Carl's-side-of-the-family, please know we are thinking of you and wishing we were not so far away here in the UK. We know you made Jane one of your own, and we are so glad she had your love and support, even after she lost Carl (he was a singularity, whom I, for one, have not forgotten either). Having known him (too little), I can imagine you are salt of the earth people. Thank you for being there, not only for Jane, but now also for Judy when her kin are so far away. Jane and Judy are my mother's first cousins (their mothers were sisters), so they are my first cousins, once removed, although that sounds so analytical and remote. They have been more like sisters to my mother and cool aunts to me and my sister, Meg Woodside. I know Jane was a second mother and grandmother to you all and that you meant the world to her. God's peace to you all. Sincerely, Krista Ovist (and Michael Scott)

Jane made music with her life's breath. It was cut too short. We hope this gift will help others to keep the inspiration flowing.
