Catherine taught my two oldest children in Sixth grade at Milton Middle School in Delaware. She was a strict teacher and didn’t believe in wasting any valuable teaching time. As a parent, I truly appreciated this style of teaching. One of the most memorable field trips that my children went on was organized by Mrs. Bettis. She took the students on a trip to Lancaster, Pa. and they toured many famous places and even ate at an Amish Smorgasbord . Milton Middle School was a Title 1 school which meant that it had a very high rate of students that lived in poverty; some even had dirt floors and no running water. This field trip gave every student the opportunity to experience the way other people lived and to also see another state. Our state doesn’t have sales tax, so the students got to learn about sales tax. This field trip was a lot of work for her to organize but she never complained. Also the day was long about 14 hours; but she felt that it was an important trip for them to take. I am going to Lancaster in two weeks and going to visit places that we went to on that field trip. I decided to call her and thank her once again; but instead I found out that she passed away. I’m sorry for your loss.the world has lost a truly great educator.. On the lighter side if you ask my children their favorite memory of her, it was that she would change her shoes at least five times a day in class. Her feet would start to hurt, so she would kick them off and put on a different pair and never stop her lesson. Even though she has passed away her memory will live on in the hearts and minds of many former students from Cape Henlopen School District. Sincerely, Carol Davis (302) 422-5498

Met Mrs. Bettis in Milton, DE -one of my teachers when I was 11...the same age my own daughter is today. What I remember is a warm, embracing, caring teacher. Sometimes at 11, students need those traits- and I'm very grateful for those memories. Today, there are so many teachers that treat 11 year olds like adults. I choose to remember how Mrs. Bettis treated me and I hold the bar in her honor and wish more teachers would be like her. Prayers to all of you...even though briefly, I'm so glad I met her.
