Bernadette L. Barnes, 81, of Manheim, PA, formerly of York, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, August 8, 2017 at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in York, she was the daughter of the late Edwin A. and Beatrice Mortorff Larkin. She was the wife of the late Raymond H. Barnes, Jr. who died in 2010.
Bernadette was a member of St. Richard Catholic Church in Manheim where she taught CCD classes. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from West Chester University and a Master's degree from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. MI. She was an educator for many years teaching in Elkhart, IN, Sturgis, MI, Mother Seton Catholic School in Emmitsburg, MD, York City Schools, and Lancaster Country Day School. After moving to Manheim, she was employed as a substitute teacher by Manheim Central School District. She was a member of the Sturgis, York, Pennsylvania, and Michigan Teachers' Associations. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. In addition to reading and knitting, she enjoyed traveling and attending the theater and symphony.
She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Maribea W. Barnes-Marsano, wife of Dominic M. Marsano, of Marion, OH; four siblings, Regina C., wife of Edwyn Bennett, of Dover, PA, John A. Larkin of York, a twin brother, Michael E., husband of Joann Larkin, of York, and Peggy M., wife of Leo Keller, of New Freedom; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 11, 2017 at 10:00 AM at Hoffer Auditorium at Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 North Penryn Road, Manheim, PA 17545 with Rev. Stephen Weitzel as celebrant. Private interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA. The family will receive guests at Hoffer Auditorium on Friday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the service.
