Obituary of Joan L. Bishop

Joan L. Bishop, 80, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at Pleasant View Retirement Community in Manheim, PA. Born in Elizabethtown, she was the daughter of the late John Donald and Mary E. Hipple Carl.  She was the wife of David G. Bishop for 59 years on June 20.

Joan was a 1956 graduate of Elizabethtown High School and a 1959 graduate of Lancaster School of Nursing.  She retired in 2004 from Mount Calvary Christian School in Elizabethtown where she was employed as a school nurse for 15 years.  Previously, she was employed by Agape Nursing Services where she received duties in various settings throughout Lancaster County.  For decades, Joan participated in a Harvard University study exclusively for registered nurses.  Joan was a member of Middle Creek Church of the Brethren in Lititz.  Previously, she was a longtime member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown where she was a choir member, youth leader and taught Sunday school in the primary department.  She was also a former member of Lake View Bible Church in Manheim where she also sang in the choir.  She and her husband often sang duets during worship services at Pleasant View Retirement Community and in their church. 

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children, David T., husband of Stella Lightsy Bishop, of Redman, WA, Brad C. Bishop of Dayton, OH, Lisa R., wife of Delno Supplee, III, of Sevierville, TN, and Darren K., husband of Dawn R. Spitler Bishop, of Denver, PA; eight grandchildren, David Christopher Bishop, Alicia Hope Supplee Walck, Del Supplee, Ethan Supplee, Johanna Supplee, Kenton Supplee, Jessica Bishop Daub, and Kelsey Bishop; eight great grandchildren; and a sister, Brenda R., wife of Edward Hanna, of Allentown.  She was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Janice Ford.

A funeral service will be held on Friday afternoon, April 5, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Middle Creek Church of the Brethren, 351 West Middle Creek Road., Lititz, PA. There will be no public viewing.  Interment will be private in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.  The family will receive guests on Thursday evening from 6-7:30 PM at the Gathering Place at Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 North Penryn Road, Manheim 17545 and at the church on Friday afternoon from 1:00 PM until the time of the service.
