John and I go back go back to 1945 first grade in school. At age 14 we went on a Train ride to Philmont Scout Ranch at Raton New Mexico along with other scouts.. It was an 81 mile 11 day trek in the wilderness.[memories] John in high school spent a lot of spare time working on his ford hot rod at Kennel's garage in Ephrata. After school we went our separate way until a chance meeting on April 6 1990 at the Gottschalk Toy Truck Auction at New Hope Pa.. My wife Marian saw john first while I was looking at toy trucks in a cabinet. She knew john from school.John and I got reacquainted and the love of trucks brought us back to what would be many good memories in the future. We went to many antique truck shows fron Macungie Pa to Fontana California and points in between.John was President of the local chapter of the A T H S for many years and did an outstanding job of it.I am not sure when I first became aware that john was a born again christian ,but he was,.John was married to Phyllis 60 years and an Angel in caring for John these last 7 years.John said were it not for her he would not have lived as long as he did.John will be remembered as a person of conviction and purpose. Rest in peace John.

John was a great man and one I look up to and hope to be like him in the Trucking community! I always loved the stories he would share about things he had accomplished or seen while Trucking! John would always tell me he enjoyed seeing my boys who are now 11 and 6 at the truck shows. I will miss John and his laughter. John and my poppy (Clutch) had this ongoing story about what John always claimed was the first time he ever met my poppy! They both hauled chemicals (John for Mason Dixion and my poppy for Central Transport) John said he was in Panama City Florida at a tank wash (Florida Rock and Tank) and my poppy came in picking his truck apart and asking him all kinds of questions about his truck. My poppy claims he never washed out at Florida Rock and Tank in Panama City! It was always something to hear them to back and forth at the Tri State Truck Show! My family and myself will miss John until we can meet again! From my family to Mrs Phyllis and John's family we send our love and prayers.

John was one of my favorite people. He and Phyllis always shared a kind word as our faith calls us to do. John will remain in my heart through the notes and cards he sent to me through the years, again offering a kind word or support. Godspeed “Strawhat”, I’m sure you and Emmanuel are deep into some trucking tales already. Peace, my brother.

I am lighting a candle for John Hiestand a long time friend/buddy. Time goes back to high school days and all the good times that we had, in school and out. We have continued to stay in touch by visiting each other and going to some events together.
You are sadly missed and will always keep you in mind. Wayne Roache'
