Obituary of David S. Coble
David S. Coble, 77, of Hershey, PA, passed into Glory on Friday afternoon, December 6, 2024 at his residence. He was the son of the late J. Ira and Anna Mae Meckley Coble. David was born, raised, and lived his entire life on the farm deeded to his family by William Penn. He was the husband of Sylvia E. Hoffman Coble for 56 years on August 24.
David was a member of West Green Tree Church of the Brethren where he served in the ministry of deacon, was assistant moderator, attended the Wednesday night Bible study, and met with the men’s group on Saturday mornings. He was also a member of Gideon’s International, Lower Dauphin Camp. Previously, he was a longtime member of Conewago Church of the Brethren.
During the Vietnam War, he served his country as a sergeant in the United States Army. David earned both a Bachelor of Science and Master’s degree in animal science from Penn State. In addition to selling grain and seeds for the Pioneer Company for 40 years, he was the seventh generation to farm their Bicentennial Farm in Conewago Twp. He also was a member of the Conewago Planning Commission and contributed to the agricultural community by being a member of the Dauphin County Farm Bureau, serving on the Dauphin County Conservation District Board, and being a 4-H leader for many years.
When David wasn’t working, he enjoyed playing golf or spending time hunting at Safety First Camp near Shippensburg. He and his wife also loved to travel to visit family and friends throughout the United States. They also traveled to Belgium, England, and Scotland. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, which he considered God’s greatest blessing in his life.
In addition to his wife, he was survived by five sons, David S. Coble, Jr. of Hershey, Dwayne S., husband of Laurie Roberts Coble, of Middletown, Darryl S. Coble, husband of Joe Hess, of Lancaster, Jonathan I., husband of Kimberly O’Shell Coble, of Hershey, and Jeremy A Coble., husband of Nicole West Nikolaus, of Manheim, ten grandchildren; two step grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two siblings, John I., husband of Georgene Coble, of Billings, MT, and Kathryn, wife of Paul Wagner, of Enon, OH; and a sister-in-law, Bonnie Coble of Rhoads, IA. He was also preceded in death by two siblings, Dolores Alleman and Jay E. Coble.
A memorial service will be held on Friday morning, December 13, 2024 at 11:30 AM at West Green Tree Church of the Brethren, 740 Greentree Road, Elizabethtown, PA 17022. There will be no public viewing. Private interment will be in Risser Mennonite Cemetery. The family will receive guests on Friday morning from 10:30 AM until the time of the service.
