So sorry for your loss. Her memories will always live on, and we know she is in good hands now and with Robert again.

It’s especially hard to lose loved ones during the Christmas holiday. We said good-bye to my Aunt Ruthann today. What do we need to remember about her? A woman of bedrock faith, she raised 6 kids and, for my growing-up years, was a permanent fixture making sure NOBODY ever went hungry at family events. As far back as I remember there would never have been a Christmas, Easter or Cave reunion (always the first Saturday in August) where she wasn’t prepping, serving or packaging great food. Much of it straight out of the garden during summer months. Aunt Ruthann’s deserts are part of the reason I believe that chocolate is a food group unto itself. She and Uncle Bob were regular visitors in Atlanta when they drove from PA to FL. A box of golden almond bars was always good for a night’s stay at the 6497 and there was always a great meal and a lot of laughter when they visited. Her super-power was helpfulness. Outsiders won’t get this, but the Amish who live in a horse-and-buggy world sometimes need a little help getting to the doctor or traveling longer distances. While I never really understood the rules, apparently it’s OK if an outsider provides shuttle service when it’s really important. Aunt Ruthann provided something of an Amish Uber service, always respectful of their beliefs and often traveling long distances to be helpful. She had pride in the ideals of Milton Hershey and being part of a community built on the idea that profit is important but so is giving something back. She was a huge collector of Hershey history, memorabilia and participant in commemorating the big events. One really precious photo she shared with me was from the 1930’s where her father Jake and Grandpa Herr were part of the crew that built the Hershey Community Center. The roots ran deep. May her memory always remind us of the many ways we can be helpful to others and that little things we can do are sometimes life-changing for others.
