Obituary of Harry K. Longenecker

Harry K. Longenecker, 91, of Elizabethtown, PA, passed into eternity on Sunday morning, February 11, 2018 at Masonic Health Care Center. Born in South Annville Twp., Lebanon, Co., he was the son of the late Harry B. and Minnie Kreider Longenecker. He was the husband of Doris "Dodie" Heisey Longenecker for 69 years on September 4. Harry was a longtime member of Christ Church United Church of Christ in Elizabethtown where he had served on the consistory, property committee, taught Sunday school, and was faithful in visiting church members. He was a 1944 graduate of Hershey High School. During World War II, he served as an electricians mate second class in the United States Navy. Following the war, he was a "Seagoing Cowboy" with Brethren Volunteer Service accompanying a shipment of bred mares to war-torn Poland. Prior to retiring in 1981, Harry was employed for 15 years as an electrician by New Cumberland Army Depot. Previously, he was employed as an electrician by the former Olmstead Air Force Base. Later, he worked parttime at the former Zarfoss Hardware in Elizabethtown and its successor, J.B. Hostetter & Sons in Mount Joy. Harry was a member of the American Legion, Conewago Post No. 329 in Elizabethtown, Disabled American Veterans, Elizabethtown Lions Club, and a founding member of the Rheems Athletic Association. In addition to enjoying woodworking, he was an avid Detroit sports fan, especially the Detroit Tigers. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Vicki L. Gillmore of Columbia and Jack R. Longenecker of Elizabethtown; and a grandson, Brent (Anna) Erb of Birdsboro. He was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jack L. Gillmore, and three sisters, Helen Seltzer Kern, Ruth Light, and Ann Brubaker. The family would like to express their sincere thanks for the excellent care provided by the Lafayette East staff of Masonic Village Health Care Center. A memorial service will be held on Friday afternoon, February 16, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Christ Church United Church of Christ, 247 South Market Street, Elizabethtown, PA. Private interment will be in Mount Tunnel Cemetery. There will be no public viewing. The family will receive guests at the church on Friday afternoon from 1:00 PM until the time of the service.
